Europa en wat mij verder van de straat houdt

In de zomer van 2007 maakte ik een reis door Europa, die leidde van Amsterdam naar Jeruzalem. Dezelfde reis die Abraham Kuyper maakte. Ik blogde erover op www.omdeoudewereldzee.nl en ik schreef drie verhalen en twee opiniestukken erover in CV-Koers (raad te plegen via dezelfde link).Na die stukken liep ik stage bij het WI van de ChristenUnie (zie http://europabrainstorm.wordpress.com voor enkele resultaten. Het thema ‘Europa’ heb ik sindsdien eigenlijk laten liggen, omdat ik het gevoel had dat andere kwesties (Gaza, Iran) wat urgenter waren. Maar: deze week plaatste ik in Nrc.Next en ND (27 mei 2009) twee verhalen over hoe ik, als protestantste Europeaan, de huidige verkiezingscampagne ervaar. Ook het RD brengt zaterdag 30 mei een verhaal van mijn hand hierover en ik hoop diezelfde dag tussen 12 en 13:30 uur aan te schuiven bij EO.nl, op Radio 5, om deze stukken toe te lichten. Mijn vader, die het programma presenteert, heeft beloofd zich er niet mee te bemoeien. We zullen zien! Als de Europese storm weer wat is gaan liggen, heb ik weer tijd voor andere dingen…

Voor de liefhebber (en voor mezelf) zet ik het even op een rijtje.

New Monasticism – Een antwoord

De bal is opgeworpen door Johan ter Beek. Hij valt nu her en der neer. Ook ik zal mijn duit eens in het zakje doen: 8 grote vragen over hedendaagse monastieke vormen, opgesteld door Johan,  en een poging tot een antwoord.

De laatste tijd schreef ik op een paar plekken wat langere essays over de generatie waar ik deel van uitmaak.Wat kan dat goede, oude christendom in deze spannende nieuwe tijden betekenen?

A wind of change…

Today I signed a contract, connecting me to the IZB, which is a large Dutch Missions Organisation connected to the national Protestant Church.

It will be my job, starting off next JUNE 1st 2008, to build bridges between the local church (Noorderkerk) and the Jordaan area and it’s inhabitants. Partly this means ‘homecoming’ to me, because I lived in this area for my first 2 years of study in Amsterdam.

The Jordaan is one of Amsterdam’s historical districts – currenlty home to the city’s Artscene, it’s political and cultural elites as well as to many students and expats.

Lotte and me will move into this cute house the upcoming weeks, and live on the 2 top-floors of the appartment in the middle:

Iran in the face of the elections

The past few weeks my main occupation was to track down opinions and stories around Iran’s upcoming elections and Iran’s current politics. we interviewed townpeople and politicians, businessmen and mollahs, students and working class heroes to gain as many insigths as we can.

After 2 weeks in Iran I’m back home now. The upcoming 7 days until the elections we will still blog daily @ http://weblogiran.blogvandaag.nl . More on Iran and it’s political system can be found at the general site @ http://iran.eenvandaag.nl .

I had a blog-entry here about a good piece of theatre I witnessed, but the blog somehow mysteriously disappeared.

However – just for information: I will be travelling Iran from today, Feb. 17th – Early March. Documentation in video and text will be available @ http://iran.eenvandaag.nl .

Welcome! 

My name is Karel Smouter, please make yourself at home on this weblog.

This weblog replaces the old Dutch language weblog entitled ´Een kleine revolutie´ and the now defunct traveljournal/weblog ´Om de oude wereldzee´ . This freshly deviced English language weblog enables me to communicate better with all you internationals.

For those who are new to me: I´m a part-time student of philosophy, writing on a freelance basis for a range of different media. Please be directed to my portfolio for an impression of my expressions.

I will use this place as an online portfolio/storage for published articles and as a place to announce news about projects and publications I´m engaged in.
